A design strategy is a widespread philosophy that could or might not comprise a guide for particular methods. Some are to guide the final goal of the design. Different procedures are to steer the tendencies of the designer.

In the reflection-in-action paradigm, designers exchange between "framing", "making moves", and "evaluating moves". "Framing" refers to conceptualizing the problem, i.e., defining aims and objectives. A "move" is a tentative design decision. The analysis process might result in further moves within the design.

In the sensemaking–coevolution–implementation framework, designers alternate between its three titular activities. Sensemaking comprises the two framing and comparing moves. Implementation is the method of making the design object. Coevolution is "the method where the design agent concurrently refines its mental image of the layout object in accordance with its intellectual picture of the context, and vice versa"
