At least two views of design activity are in step with the action-centric perspective. The two contain three undemanding activities.

A layout strategy is a preferred philosophy that could or might not comprise a guide for particular methods. Some are to steer the general target of the design. Other systems are to guide the tendencies of the designer.

In the reflection-in-action paradigm, designers trade between "framing", "making moves", and "evaluating moves". "Framing" refers to conceptualizing the problem, i.e., defining aims and objectives. A "move" is a tentative layout decision. The analysis approach may lead to further moves within the design.

In the sensemaking–coevolution–implementation framework, designers alternate among its three titular activities. Sensemaking involves the two framing and evaluating moves. Implementation is the process of creating the design object. Coevolution is "the approach in which the design agent simultaneously refines its intellectual image of the layout object in keeping with its intellectual photograph of the context, and vice versa"
